Cades Cove

Cades Cove, the most visited area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is a 6,800-acre valley about 31 miles away from Pigeon Forge. Home to wooded trails, diverse natural life, preserved historic buildings from the 19th century, and the stunning Abrams Falls, it's well worth the trip.

The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail features one of the largest and fastest flowing mountain streams in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This motor trail is six miles long, offering views of rushing mountain streams, old-growth forest and a number of historic buildings. The entrance to the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is near the Rainbow Falls parking area. The Grotto Falls trail head, another popular waterfall, is located along the loop. Please note that buses, trailers and motor homes are not permitted on Roaring Fork. While exploring the Roaring Fork area, a must see is Rainbow Falls, an extraordinary 80-foot tall waterfall named for the rainbow it creates from the mist on sunny afternoons, it’s also the highest waterfall in the Smokies. Grotto Falls is also in the Roaring Fork area, this 25-foot high waterfall happens to also be the only waterfall in the Smokies that you can walk behind.

Clingmans Dome

Clingmans Dome, the highest point in Tennessee and the Smokies, is unmissable. Open year-round but the road leading to it is closed from December 1 through March 31 and whenever weather conditions require. Along the seven miles of Clingmans Dome Road there are scenic pullouts with endless views of ridges and valleys. At the road's end is a large parking area where a 0.5 mile trail leads up to the summit.

Sugarlands Visitor Center

The Sugarlands Visitor Center features extensive natural history exhibits and showings of a free 20-minute film about the park, and the staff there are on hand to answer any questions about planning your trip through the park. The facility also features a Great Smoky Mountains Association bookstore and gift shop. There are Ranger-led programs available seasonally and you can get a backcountry permit at the Sugarlands Visitor Center in TN. Nearby you can explore nature trails nearby that feature a historic cabin and waterfall. Public restrooms, telephones, and drink machines are also available.
