EcoEarth Globe from Acid Sphere Tank 200 Water St. NE, Salem, OR 2.81

Originally part of a paper and wood pulp processing plant (try saying that five times fast) the area where Salem's Waterfront Park now sits is largely without reminders of its past - except for a large spherical tank that was once used as part of the acid bath process for paper making. Too difficult to dispose of, Salem citizens decided to turn the tank into the EcoEarth Globe, a tile mosaic created on the outside of the tank. Backed by donations and volunteers' time, the mosaic highlights include mermaids, North American railroads, historical figures like Nelson Mandela, and ecosystems, like the Brazilian rainforest. The entire world is pictured right here in Salem - go see it all for yourself.
