Zip through Hanford Reach, the last free-flowing section of the Columbia River in the country, on a heart-pounding jet boat tour. Columbia River Journeys offers tours of the Columbia and Lower Snake Rivers; the local favorite is the tour of the Hanford Reach National Monument. Onboard, you'll watch wildlife, see some of our area's most scenic spots, learn about one of the country's most historic landmarks, as well as the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, home of World War II and Cold War Nuclear Reactors… and the list goes on! Explore on your own, or book a group adventure; tours are offered for individuals, school and business groups, reunions, and weddings.

Hanford Reach National Monument 5111 Columbia Park Trail, 99336 509-585-4293 1.75

The first U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service national monument and the only one within the interior U.S., Hanford Reach National Monument was protected by Presidential proclamation in 2000, and is the gorgeous site of sweeping vistas, high bluffs, rare plants, and fields of wildflowers. Take a trip along the river and you might just encounter mule deer, coyotes, bald eagles, great blue herons, or white pelicans; a large elk herd can be found in the canyons, and, believe it or not, porcupines are also a frequent sight. Historically speaking, the area is home to plutonium reactors along the river, remnants of WWII and the Cold War, and the Plutonium from B Reactor fueled "Fat Man," the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. While no longer in production, the reactors are now being dismantled, and the area's land and water cleaned. Visit one of the most unusual sites in the region and be amazed by the wildlife and history that abound in equal measure. (Insider's tip: The lack of visitor facilities or info centers only adds to this site's unique, adventurous appeal!)
