Jewel Deán is a Baltimore Native who has been singing most of her life. Her parents singing gospel music heavily influenced her. It was in this environment that she learned how to harmonize, often for fun with her sister.
Jewel was fortunate enough to receive some formal musical training in middle school under the direction of Navasha Daya (formerly of Fertile Ground). That experience ignited a passion for performance and for songs with meaning. In high school, she received furthered her vocal training through Ms. Heather Caulton (vocal trainer). Under her direction, Jewel sang various styles of music including Classical, Latin, Spirituals, and Gospel. Jewel obtained many awards and recognition for her outstanding participation in a Chamber Chorus, Honors Chorale, and was selected for the esteemed Baltimore County Chorus and Maryland State Choir. After being exposed to different types of music, Jewel found herself seeking inspiration outside here traditional gospel roots. Gravitating to artists such as Jill Scott, India Arie, and Lauryn Hill showed her that there we're women who were proud of their strength, sensuality, spirituality, and authenticity. These artists continue to be an inspiration as she transparently tells the story of her life through original songs. Jewel says “my music style is authentic soul that connects with music that speaks to the heart and soul; music that brings healing and invokes emotional expression.” Jewel prides herself in creating experiences. Audiences that have experienced her performances and traditionally describe it as: "a hair raising and goose bump type of experience”. Jewel desires to touch people all around the world. She aspires to create timeless music; music that transcends generations and is always relevant. Providing a source of women’s empowerment and freedom through each lyric that she writes is her ultimate mission. Jewel has opened for such acts as The War and Treaty. Jewel has been the featured artist in several open mic and spoken word venues in Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia. She was named in “10 New Artists You Need to Know”--‐ Lamar Hill.
Jewel is completing her debut EP with Stinkiface Music that includes a guest performance by Kevin Jackson (renowned guitarist/songwriter). This EP is set to be released 2016 and has already created high expectation. “Flat footed power house singing.
